A major series of above ground oil shale retorting experiments was conducted by Paraho Development, Inc., in its Semiworks and Pilot Plant retorts at Anvil Points, Colorado. The retorts contain a packed bed of 0.1- to 3.0-inch shale particles which slowly descends, driven by gravity and controlled by a moving retarder grate at the bottom.
