Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) field experiments in subbituminous coal deposits have successfully demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing gas from coal (Covell et ale 1980, Hill et al. 1980, Ahner 1982). The United States Department of Energy (DOE) with an industrial consortium, which includes Gas Research Institute (GRI), is planning a UCG field demonstration (Rocky Mountain 1) at Hanna, Wyoming. The Western Research Institute (WRI) is responsible for site characterization, environmental monitoring, postburn evaluation, and site cleanup for the field demonstration. Because of potential groundwater contamination, water treatment and minimizing organic contamination are key concerns.
