Western Trails explored the adaptability/adoptability of the Colorado Digitization Project model for collaboration among cultural heritage institutions, focusing digitization efforts on a statewide basis. The State Libraries of Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas led these explorations. This collection represents the Western Trails contributions from the State of Wyoming.

Civil War Army Forge Cap
An enlisted man's fatigue or bummer style cap from the Civil War. It is made of blue wool with general service side buttons, a leather chin strap, and enameled leather bill. The bill is square in shape with rounded corners. The interior is lined in brown leather and oil cloth. The cap has a paper label inside with "Size No. 3, U.S. Army, L. & I. Phillips." 6 in. Civil War Spurs
A pair of men's brass Civil War enlisted spurs. The spurs have iron rowels which protrude above and below the shank. Each end of the yokes has two slots for attachment of the spur straps. Stamped on the end of one of the yokes is "Allegheny Arsenal." Civilization's Guardian: Army Aid To Emigrants On The Platte River Road, 1846-1869.
The frontier army of the 19th century has been portrayed as a group of fighting cavalrymen. However, Tate's article explains the "overwhelming majority of time spent in mundane but more important duties," such as the issuance of commissary supplies to travelers, medical care, blacksmithing, carpentry services, providing a post for mail delivery, road improvements by army enlisted men, bridge construction and law and order. Details are discussed in the backdrop of Fort Kearny in Nebraska and Fort Laramie in Wyoming.
