Western Trails explored the adaptability/adoptability of the Colorado Digitization Project model for collaboration among cultural heritage institutions, focusing digitization efforts on a statewide basis. The State Libraries of Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas led these explorations. This collection represents the Western Trails contributions from the State of Wyoming.

Enlisted Shell Jacket, Civil War, Ca. 1861
Civil War period (ca 1861) enlisted, dark blue wool shell jacket. The jacket has yellow piping in a "V" shape on the cuffs, along the bottom of the jacket and up the front with a standing collar. There are two small general service buttons on each side of the collar, twelve more down the front and two on each cuff. The jacket is lined with heavy weight light brown wool. When the military abandoned Fort Laramie in 1890, civilians who had worked at the fort and those that had begun farming or ranching operations had to live independently of previous fort needs and activities. The article details homesteading and settlement of the "military reservation" and the civilians' actions to claim property and land.
