Western Trails explored the adaptability/adoptability of the Colorado Digitization Project model for collaboration among cultural heritage institutions, focusing digitization efforts on a statewide basis. The State Libraries of Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas led these explorations. This collection represents the Western Trails contributions from the State of Wyoming.

Second Segment Of The Oregon Trail: Cold Spring To Fort Fetterman
The Wyoming State Historical Society's 21st trek of the Historical Trail Treks covered about 100 miles along the Oregon Trail from Cold Spring, near Guernsey to Fort Fetterman, near Douglas. About 150 trekkers began their trek at the Frederick ranch near the Cold Spring marker. Sioux Cradleboard Cover
Leather, Sioux cradleboard cover lined with red and white print cotton. It is rectangular in shape with an open front and base. The sides and top are fully beaded. The top flap is beaded on both sides with two sections of fringe. The bead motif consists of a white ground with a diamond with chevrons and prongs alternating with boxes containing American flags, forked elements and prongs. Sioux Cradleboard Cover
Rectangular, smoked leather, Sioux cradleboard cover line with cotton print fabric. The top has solid quill work consisting of a red ground with yellow, white, green, pink and purple stepped diamonds and crosses. The side have vertical bands of three wide bands of green and white with purple and yellow cross motifs separated by two sets of three narrow red bands. The top contains alternating vertical bands of white with dark blue, yellow and green crosses. The top and bottom borders are of solid white and solid yellow rectangles with dark blue dividers. The top is edged with red wool with dentellium shells and red down drops. There are thong and red wool ties at the back. Sioux Moccasins
A pair of Sioux men's moccasins. The moccasins are constructed from tanned, one-piece leather with an upper attached tongue, thong tie and white muslin cuff sewn with sinew and thread. A beaded border of a white ground with a green and red box with a dark blue row along the sides with a dark blue triangle forming a "wing" separated by green and red boxes. The same design is repeated down the center vamp. Sioux Moccasins
A pair of Sioux men's moccasins. The moccasins are constructed from a tanned leather upper with an added split "V" tongue, rawhide soles and thong tie with a full, beaded border. The border is of light blue beads with dark blue triangles alternating with yellow, dark blue and red "cross" shapes. The heel area contains a red quilled band. The vamp has a red quilled ground with three dark blue and white boxes. The tongue has an orange quilled ground with remnants of metal and feather tinklers. Sioux Pipe
A two piece Sioux pipe. The first component is a red, cylindrical "T" shaped catlinite bowl with a tapered front. The second part of the pipe is a flattened, rectangular wooden stem with rounded corners, a mouth piece and connecting section. Per donor: "Sioux Indian peace pipe ca. 1888." Sioux Pipe
A two piece Sioux pipe. The first component to the pipe is a red catlinite bowl in a cylindrical "T" shape decorated with incised lines and bands in sets of four. The second part of the pipe is a hollow, red catlinite stem. The stem is rectangular in shape with incised line and band design of one wide band flanked by two thing bands. Measurements of the bowl: 4.5 in. (h) x 12 in. (l) x 1.24 in. (w) and the measurements of the stem are: 17.5 in. (l) x .9 in. (w) x 1.3 in. (d). Sioux Possible Bag
A native Sioux rectangular, tanned leather possible bag with a flap closure, leather ties and bead work. The flap contains a band of white ground, a bar with forked elements between two stepped triangles. There are metal cones with red horsehair on the flap and sides. The sides contain a white ground with a repeated motif of a vertical cross and forked bar. Sioux Saddle Blanket
Rectangular, green wool Sioux saddle blanket with three red and two white stripes alternating along all sides. Along the inner red stripe are metal sequins in groups of nine. There is a diagonal blue piece of fabric with red and pink ribbons and a rosette at each corner. At the corners of the green wool is a blue fabric circle with metal sequins, wool tassels and two quilled drops in orange, green and black with dentellium shells.
