'Ah Wilderness'

The title Ah, Wilderness! derives from the oft—quoted quatrain of Omar Khayam:
“A book of verses underneath the Bough,
A jug of wine, a loaf of bread—and thou
Beside me singing in the wilderness——
Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow!”

Eugene O’Neill titled his comedy “Oh, Wilderness!” when he completed it in 1933, however, the producers, the Theatre Guild, persuaded him to change the title to Ah, Wilderness!
